Students are encouraged to apply for competitive fellowships whenever
possible, as a fellowship awards can be a valuable achievement for
a student's graduate record. Following are the application dates
of a
number of different fellowships:
August: NIH Predoctoral (NRSA)
October: NSF Predoctoral
December: NIH Predoctoral (NRSA)
March: Most U of M Graduate School Endowed Fellowships
April: NIH Predoctoral (NRSA)
Application forms for NIH or NSF fellowships are available from
SPA (624-0061). It is strongly recommended that an NIH or NSF grant
be prepared and submitted during the second year. This serves to
focus the thesis plans and outline the introduction to the thesis,
and provides both students and advisors with an agreed upon list
of objectives. It is also excellent practice for future grant-writing.
