Research Interests:

We are interested in understanding the role of antioxidants such as vitamin E and oxidative stress in modulation of brain function. Numerous experiments suggest that oxidative stress is involved in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders.  Our goal is to obtain experimental information that will aid in understanding the mechanism of how oxidative stress is involved in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases .  One of our most recent studies examines the role of apoE in modulating vitamin E in brain.  The E4 isoform of apoE has been implicated as a risk factor for the incidence of Alzheimer's disease.  We are also studying the role of mitochondria in inducing oxidative stress.  Modulation of oxidative stress by exogenous antioxidants and endogenous antioxidants such as vitamin E, vitamin C and glutathione is also being studied in our laboratory.
