Paul A. Iaizzo, Ph.D.

Professor of Anesthesiology, Physiology and Surgery

Department of Surgery

Director of Education for the Lillehei Heart Institute
E-mail: iaizz001@umn.edu

Research Interests:

In one of his many projects, his research team has developed, in collaboration with Medtronic, a four chamber working heart model which allows for "real-time" visual assessment of internal anatomy. This collaboration has lead to the creation of the educational CD, the "Visible HeartT Viewer" and the Visible Heart web site.

He also performs applied research in the areas of clinical thermoregulation, skeletal muscle force assessment, the biomechanics of the spine, and the overwintering of black bears (Nature 409:997, 2001). He teaches in numerous courses, such as the year long "New Product Design and Business Development", the intensive week long short courses "Advanced Cardiac Physiology and Anatomy" and "Advanced Physiology of the Neuromuscular Junction",the lecture and lab courses on "Quantitative Physiology", and the UNITE course "Biomedical Applications of Heat transfer in Humans".
